  1. Some years ago, farmers were accustomed to go by road to Cork with loads of vegetables, grain and other farm produce. One night two men started with two carts of potatoes. Somewhere along the road one man asked his companion for a match to light his pipe. As he had no match they settled to go into the next house they would meet on the road.
    After a time they came to a small thatched house with a light in the window, and one man held the horses while the other man went in. Lifting the latch and walking in he was amazed to find the house full and a "wake" in progress. He especially thought it queer that a great number of old, bearded men were present at the wake.
    He knelt down as usual by the side of the corpse and said a prayer for the dead. Then turning to the company he saluted them, but not a word of an answer did he get from anybody present. He then went to the fire and lit his pipe and went out.
