  1. A cord about 12 or 18 inches long is procured, and is knotted twice in reverse order, few more intertwinings take place, and the cord is ready.
    If a cow has a pain re, the operator takes an end of the cord in each hand, and strikes it down the affected part three times, saying at the same time, in the name of the Father / and / the Son / and of the Holy Ghost. Amen //. He then pulls the cord taut, and if the "knots" are properly made, the cord opens out and becomes as at first without a trace of a knot. The pain is supposed to depart from animal at same time
