  1. Here are some popular "first-hand" measurement still in current use:-
    The first joint of the thumb measure 1" across - used for measuring cord or stick. Another inch measure is from the top of the thumb to the first joint. The clenched fist holding a stick covers 4" - a "hand". If the thumb is then extended upward you get a 1/2 ft. measure.
    The span from the top of the thumb to the top of the "long-finger" is supposed to be 9", i.e. if the thumb is put on a plank & the long finger extended as far as it will reach.
    A "foot" is the length of a shoe - a "yard", the distance covered from the heel of the back
