  1. The word Galán appears in many place-names locally it means --- and is still used in the same sense -- just an ordinary " big rock ". None of historical interest in the district.
    Mrs. Ml. Sullivan, Cill Athach, has a field called Leaca na Scríobhnóirecht (?) some sort of an inscription, rather indistinct on a rock there.
    Any amount of stones along the sea on both sides of Dursey Sound with holes on them. Said to have been used for land-fasting ships in the old day when this district had a flourishing foreign trade.
    The Irish for land-fast is buíthióg, found in a cuas called Poll Buítheóige in Dursey
