  1. The district of Allihies consists of nine town-lands. Each town-land has a name of its own. They are "Cluin", "Ballydonegan" "Cahermeelaboe", "Coom" "Coominches" "Allihies" "Barness" "Fuhir" and "Kealogue".
The word "Cluin" means a meadow, or low-lying land, as the ground is very fertile and low. "Ballydonegan" is an Irish word meaning "The Town Of The Donegans". This town-land is named after a famous clan called the Donegans who lived there long ago. "Cahermeelaboe" is also an Irish word meaning "The City Of The Thousand Cows" as it is said a man lived there long ago who owned a thousand cows. The word "Coom" means a hollow as this barony is situated at the foot of a hill in a class of glen.
