    used for giving light at night. Rush lights were made out of rushes. The rushes were peeled and dried. Then, they were melted in fat on a "grisset".
    Threads of cotton were twisted for the wick of a dip. The wick was dipped in fat, and when it was hard it was dipped again and again until it was thick enough.
