Austin Stack was captain of the Kerry team on that day and my father was playing with Mayo.

The final All-Ireland of the competition lay between Mayo and Kildare. This match was played at Jones's Road (now Croke Park), Dublin.
I have heard my father often refer to the wonderful game played by their goaley Páid Sweeney. He had but one complete hand - the left. From the other hand the fingers were all missing. Many people maintained that "Páid's crook was his best hand at football.
