- There was a great famine in Ireland in the years 1846 and 1847. This district was thickly populated before the famine. The people were dying so quickly they had to bury some of them in the fields.
Then small holdings were made into big farms and handed over to wealthy people.
The potato crop decayed in the ridges before they ripened for digging. People knew nothing about the blight before that time.
