  1. The penal laws were laws that prevented the Catholics to practice their religion. There was an end put to the Sixth of George the 1 Ireland was depending on the crown of England. No Catholic could sit in parliament. Long ago people were not allowed to go to Mass. Around this district there are a lot of ruins where priests said Mass on rocks and behind hedges. The teachers were not allowed to teach school or the catholic religion to the children. The schoolmaster taught the children under the hedges and the children
