  1. There is a stone in a field about three miles, east of Castletownbere. It is said that a Giant threw it from the top of Maulin and it landed there. That field is called "Park-a-Golane" ever since. A part of that stone landed on top of a hill in Bere Island and is to be seen from the mainland.

  2. An old woman in Bere Island said when she goes to bed she says:- Jesus of Nazareth the king of the Jews upon this bed I am going to lie, to God I give my soul to keep. There are four corners in my bed. There are four angels overhead, St. Mark, St. Luke, St Matthew, St. John. God bless the bed that I lay on. If any evil touches me Holy Mary wake me.

As I went up the Holy Land I met the blessed Virgin standing by with heavy heart and mournful eye. Seven mass-books in her hand. Seven priests singing. Seven bells ringing. Open the gates and let the Jews come out. She is thinking of her Son who is being crucified. Whoever 'll say this prayer three times a night will never enter the gates of hell.
