  1. Long ago when St Brigid was travelling this country she was coming up from Strokestown as the night was falling and had no way of carrying her bed and belongings except an ass. She fixed her bed inside in a fort on the side of Ballinderry hill and tied her ass to a stick.
After a few hours she awoke and found the ass gone. On looking round she could not see him so then she knew that he must be stolen. She put her beads around her neck and asked the Blessed Virgin that where ever he was he would not walk another step until she would find him.
The ass was just crossing a flag when he suddenly went down and the thief when he saw this ran away. When St Brigid came to him he rose up and went with her and it is said that the marks are of his four feet are there yet.
