John Lenahan was born on 13th April 1834 and died in 1912 being then aged about 77 years. Such education as he possessed was derived from a Hedge Schoolmaster by the name of Tom Burke who was a distant relation of the Burkes, at present being in Mullagh, near Ruskey, Co Roscommon. At the age of nineteen years he began to educate himself by studying from books at home. With him the art of making poetry was a gift. he simply took pencil and paper, sat down and com posed poems. His poems were published from time to time in the "Strokestown Democrat". Copies of the "Democrat" of many years ago containing some of his poems, are still preserved by his people. Here is an extract from one of his poems having reference to his school-master, Tom Burke.
