  1. Folk-Lore.
    Hedge-schools.
    There are three places in this district where there were hedge-schools. There was one near McGuire's house and a man called O'Donnell was teaching in it. There was another in Flynn's garden and Master Feeney taught in it. There was one in Loughlin's field and a man called Ryan taught in it.
    Reading, writing and arithmetic were taught in these schools and the book they used was called Reading-made-easy. Each child had to pay a penny a week to the master.
    He used to go about from village to village and stay in the people's houses.
