    If he paid for it at the time of purchasing he paid "cash down".
    Sometimes a person insteading of paying for a commodity gave in exchange for that commodity some other article. If the article given in exchange was not equal in value to the other commodity, the person who had the better end of the bargain gave also, some money, known as "boot," in order to transact the business correctly and that each would have full value for his goods.
    Long ago there were markets held on Saint Patrick's Day and on Good Friday. The people considered it lucky to sell or buy on those days.
