No hedge schools existed in Derryhanee.

No hedge schools existed in Derryhanee. There was an old thatched school there. Mr. McSwifans was the first teacher there. He was paid thirty pounds a year. He was succeeded by Mr Kelly and Miss Woods. The teachers lodged in farmers' houses. The chief subjects taught were Reading, Writing, Arithmetic, Geography, History, Grammar and Spelling. Books were used. There were six seats in this school each big enough to accomodate seven or eight pupils

The teachers who taught in Derryhanee school long ago were Mr McSwiggans, Mr Kelly and Miss Woods. They were all strangers except Mr. Kelly. They lodged in the neighbours' houses. They were paid by the government. The chief subjects taught were writing, reading, spelling, grammar, arithmetic, geography drawing, needlework and poetry. No Irish was taught. They did writing on slates with slate pencil. No pens were used. They did sums on the blackboard with chalk. There were seats similar to those used now. The teachers remained in the district till pensioned out.
