  1. The Local Fairs 31 : 3 : '38
The local fairs are held in Ballaghaderreen. In olden times buyers transacted business at crossroads and at farmers' houses. The farmers fairs were held on high hills long ago.
Men who buy a lot of cattle mark them with paint or by clipping hair at the side, but country people who buy only one or two cattle mark them with earth.
The town fair is held on the streets and in the fair-green.
Custom is paid on cattle sold, about a shilling on cows and sixpence on young cattle.
When cattle is sold two or three shillings is given as "luck-money"
The two great fairs in Ballaghaderreen are May Day and November Day. Sheep horses and bonhams are sold on the day of the cattle fair.
