  1. About eighty years ago there was a hedge school in my district. It was held in a thatched barn some two hundred yards from my house in the village of Doon. The house belonged to James Deignan.
    One teacher taught in it whose name was Edward Lee. He was not a stranger at all, he belonged to the locality. He lived with his father about three hundred yards from where he taught. Every month he got on an average thirty shillings from his pupils, but he got no salary from the Government.
    The subjects taught were English, a little Irish and Arithmetic. Very little Irish was taught. English was the principal subject in the school.
