  1. In the year 1850 there was National school erected in the village of Ballinameen. This was the first school of its kind ever erected in the Parish. This school was built by my Great Grand Father, Master Thomas Cooney. He taught in this school as principal teacher for forty years. There was a daily attendance of hundred and twenty boys. Many brilliant pupils received their early education from him, such as late Dr. Healy Bishop of Tuam. This school now no longer exists as a school house. It is a dwelling at the present time.
