- There was a hedge-school in the parish of Elphin and Kill Maryl in the townland of Lisphillip. The local name of it was "Lisphillip hedge-school". It existed about one hundred years ago. The name of the teacher was Darby Rock. The school was a barn. The master was a very funny man. He was always talking about building a chimney. In Winter he used to say "It's a ity we haven't a chimney, if we open the door, we are perished with the cold, and if we close it, we are smothered with smoke." Each scholar paid a penny every day he attended. A little Irish was thought to be taught and a good deal of English. Arithmetic was taught. The scholars wrote on slates. There were no blackboards. Darby Rock always taught the children of our district.
