Riddles
People have leisure time and especially on the long nights of winter and they have various ways for enjoying themselves and giving out riddles is one which great interest is taken in.
Many a curious answer is given and much guessing before they acknowledge that they are not giving a correct solution. Here are some of what I heard in my district.
I. As round as an apple, as deep as a cup, and all the men of Derry would not lift it up. (A well)
2 What has a tongue but does not eat? (A Shoe)
3 What goes to Dublin but never moves. (The Road)
4 All holes and still holds water. (A Sponge)
5 Four flippers, two flappers and a wagger. (A dog)
6 Why does the cow look over the wall. (She cannot look under it)
7 As round as an apple, as flat as a pan one side a woman the other a man. (A penny)
8 What stands on one leg and has its heart in its head. (A head of cabbage)
9 An S, an L, an I in the middle g.o. go spell me a riddle. (Sligo)
10 Patches upon patches without any stitches riddle me that and I'll buy you a britches. (A head of cabbage)
11 Four legs up, four legs down soft in the middle and hard all round. (A Bed)(continues on next page)
