- There were hedge schools years ago but in our district the schools were held in houses in different townslands. There was a school held in Cummins house in the townsland of Springhill and also in Miss Malone's house of Rossmore.
Mrs Cummins of Springhill taught in her own house and Miss Teresa Malone also. They were not strangers. One of the school was held in a farmers house. The teachers did not lodge in farmer's houses. The pupils gave the teacher a penny a week each. English Arithmetic and Geography were the only subject. Irish was not spoken or taught in those school, There were English and Arithmetic books used also the Catechism.
