    lived where Grattans field is now There was a tree near his house and apples grew on it. One day a tinker came to the door begging. He told her that he had nothing for her. She persevered at him and he got a knife and cut her throat. The splatters fell on the apples and ever since they are red to the core. Ever since it is called the red apple tree Grattans field is about a mile from Portlaoighise on the mountrath road
