  1. There was a hedge school in Ballydavis in an old lane. A man named Foynes taught in it. During the day he taught on a heap of sand. He made the letters and figures in the sand with scallop. At night he taught in his own house and had a black board with a clap pipe and chalk, Then in the Aitumn his pupils paid him with turf and corn. He taught them every-thing in Irish and so made fine-scholars of them when the people were not allowed to have a school.
