  1. There are four ancient Mass Pits in the Parish of Abbeyleix. At Redhills about two miles from Abbeyleix one was situated and the following story is told in connection with it. This Church was burned by a member of the De Vesci family named Captain Knapton. While passing by Ladywell outside Ballinakill he insulted a girl and the young beat him.
    In revenge he rode straight to the Redhills and burned down the Chapel. These ruins are
