- (continued from previous page)boy into the saddle. He legs not being long enough for the stirrups, the old man fixed his feet into the leathers, gave him the reins and let him off. The horse soon dismounted his rider, one foot came clear, the other turned in the leather. The horse galloped for two miles with his victim under his hooves, until he went to jump a gate, then he tore his victim free from the saddle. There he lay with not a member of his body together. Where the body lay and as it was raised up, a man with the heel of his boot made the sign of the cross in the green sod. It was midnight when the victim was found. The only mark he could make was to break a bramble of a hawthorn bush and stick it in the grown where the victim's head lay. It took root and is to be seen today the largest of its sort in the demesne. And to this day a blade of grass never grew where the sign of the cross was made.
