About 10 years ago country shops were numerous. There was a shop situated in Upper Ballypickas at the Cross Roads. It was owned by a Mrs Maher who did a very brisk trade. She sold tea, sugar, bread, candles, matches, in small quantities.
She took eggs in exchange for groceries.
A bread van owned by Mr Meehan of Abbeyleix called twice weekly and collected her supply of eggs. This van delivered bread and groceries to her also. She did a brisk Sunday trade in tobacco.
People often gave her labour in exchange for goods to farmers and Shopkeepers.
