    There was a great Famine in Ireland in the year 1846. The famine was caused by a scarcity of food. In the year before the famine there were great crops of potatoes grown in Ireland, and the next year the people did not care where they put the potatoes. The next year the potatoes were very scarce, and a man would be digging a whole day to get what would do his dinner. The cattle and other beasts went mad through the country with the hunger. A great many people died during the famine.
    There were people working on a lane at that time, and some of them died with hunger. The famine lasted from 1846 to 1847. A cargo of food came from England to Ireland during the famine, it lasted a long time because there were not many people left. Some years after the famine Ireland became a prosperous country.
