About a mile outside Durrow, on the Dublin to Cork road there is a wood called Bishop's Wood. This wood is situated inside a wall on the right side of the road and it stretches along by the side of the road for about half a mile.
During the Penal Times a bishop was caught by some soldiers at this place. He was chained to a tree in the wood and the soldiers went off and left him there to starve. About a year ago the tree to which he was chained could be plainly seen there and there was a chain around it. Since then however most of the wood has been cut down and this tree was also cut down with many others.
It is from this happening that the wood got its name.
