  1. A little over half a century ago, when Mr Robert Owens, who lived in the locality, was landlord over Ballykealy, he evicted all the tenants for refusing to pay higher rents, which they could not possibly afford. Being a rather unreasonable sort of man, the farmers expected this, and for some months previous, had been paying into a 'Land League Fund'. When evicted with their families, they were in desperate straits so the League supplied them with timber to build huts, in which they lived for some time; and here on the roadside of Ballykealy, they were obliged to eke out a miserable existence.
When they could not afford to live there longer the following men and their families went to different quarters - Mr Edward Walsh, Mr Matthew Walsh, James Kelly, Mick Kelly, Pat Larkin and John Moylan. The latter - my grandfather moved to Archerstown, and lived there until such time as the landlord left the locality. The house and lands were restored to my grandfather and he and his family came back to live in Ballykealy.
As the Larkin brothers were not able to get back their lands, they lived in a lime-kiln of ours for three years until the neighbours made a collection and built a hut for them, in which they lived until they died.
