  1. About two centuries ago a man used to carry people across the Nore at a place two miles from Abbeyleix.
    Everyone gave him a shilling, two shillings or some such offering.
    He was stopping at a farmer's house nearby and always wore a night cap. It was agreed upon by the farmer that he would bury him without taking off the night-cap. When he died the farmer did as he promised.
    Some years after the farmer dreamed there was gold hidden in the night-cap. He told his mother but she said it was better not to take any notice of his dream. This happened three
