or to the market in horses carts or in donkeys carts filled with straw.
They knew nothing of gas or electricity for lights.They poorer classes of people used to make what they called rushes and use them for light.
How they made them was, they used to melt grease in what they called a "grisset" For each light they would get about half a dozen rushes, roll a piece of dried rag tightly around them from end to end.Then soak them in the grease and light them.
