- It is lucky to set eggs on St Anthony's Say. It is customary to put a horseshoe or a threepenny bit in along with the eggs to bring good luck.
- If one is doubtful about an egg, let him shake it and if something rattles inside it is bad.
- If thunder comes before chickens emerge from their shells, they will be killed.
- To prevent the above happening, a piece of iron is placed in the nest. This counter acts the effect of thunder.
- A round topped egg dark brown is considered the best for hatching. If the egg has a pointed top, a cock will come out of it.
If a hen sucks her eggs, burn her beak with a red iron.
March chickens are usually very delicate. - Its unlucky to put down hatching eggs on Sunday. Friday is lucky.
