  1. Hedge Schools.
    There were two hedge schools in my townsland Ballintogher, one on each side of my house a few perches away. Mrs. Rebecca Porter was the teacher in one of them. My grandmother and grandfather attended this school. It was a mixed school both Catholics and Protestants, boys and girls were in it. It was a small house and every day the scholars used bring a sod of turf under their arm to make a fire. One of our own fields was their playground "Atha Buidhe" was the named of the place where it was.
    The other hedge school was owned by James Tracey, who taught in it himself. My father's granduncle went to this school. He told daddy what happened in it one day. A poor beggarman went into the school one time and he gave the teacher a little
