  1. Hedge schools were not very plentiful in my district. All that my father can recall to memory is one. It was in a barn and the teacher's name was Owen Mc Kitterick. He was blind but even so he could everyone who came to the school as he was gifted and he could therefore know them by their breathing. He was not a stranger but a native and he went home every night. Indeed his payment was light but even so he was satisfied. The scholars would pay a penny per week and a lump of turf to keep the fire working. He also got a slight payment from his landlord and that was all The subjects that were taught in these schools were Irish and very little English and Arithmetic The books that were used in the hedge schools differed very much from the books at the
