  1. A few years ago in Moneenroe the next parish to Castlecomer a shop and dwelling house were burnt down to the ground. It happened in the night and the owner of the shop and his assistant were gone to bed and were fast asleep when the fire broke out. The shop was fully stocked with groceries bread, meal, flour, and hardware and the shopkeeper was doing a great business. Sometime in the middle of the night he woke and finding his bedroom on fire he had to jump from the window. But he could do nothing as the fire had everything destroyed. I went to see it some months after and there was nothing left but the walls.
