“One time it happened that two brothers named John and Pat Dowling lived together in an old house.”
One time it happened that two brothers named John and Pat Dowling lived together in an old house. It happened one night that Pat dreamed about a crock of gold in his neighbour's field. When he got up the next morning he told John but he only made game of him. On the third night he thought he could see the path leading to where the gold was hidden. He told his brother and he told him he would go search that night. So at this the brother consented. When night came the two men set off. One of them took a pick and the other a shovel. When they were digging the owner of the field happened to be out late, and he had to pass where they were digging. When he came near he saw them and he was angry. He made up a plan so he went back and he crossed a hedge into his own house. He saddled his white horse and dressed himself in a white garment.
