  1. The only English personage of any importance, it is stated, who visited this district was Cromwell.His soldiers marched through Clara on their way- to attack the Castle of Clara, which was then the residence of the "local" chieftain, O'Shortal.
    The Chieftain and his family were evicted and sent to Connaught; and Cromwell's soldiers took possession of the Castle.
