    "The Hole in the Wall."
This once famous tavern was situated at the rere of Bibby's Drapery establishment: High St, and was approached by a laneway atthe side, almost directly opposite St. Mary's lane.
At the end of the eighteenth century and the beginning of the nineteenth it was the great supper House of Kilkenny. Amongst others who partook of supper in this tavern were the celebrated Henry Flood, Henry Grattan, and Jonah Barrington. It is believed that there was another "Hole in the Wall" in the immediate vicinity near the Town Hall. There is a popular song which runs:-
"If ever you go to Kilkenny
Inquire for the Hole in the Wall
Where you will get eggs for four and a penny
And butter for nothing at all."
