  1. We have all heard our parents from time to time speak about the famine which took place in the years 1846 - 1847.
    At that time the people of Ireland were very poor. There was no tea and very little meat used and their food chiefly consisted of potatoes and yellow meal stirabout. In that particular year all the potatoes were very black and there was such demand for the meal that it was very dear - too dear for them to buy, especially the labouring man that had to work for 4d and 5d per day.
