cortege was a very imposing one for the late Canon Tobias Walsh was then a popular young curate in the city of Kilkenny. The priests chanted as the coffin was carried to the hearse and John chanted too but his refrain on the very same note was "All to no use" John, of course, laboured under his real or fancied grievance, and thought that one who was so hard on his neighbours had not much chance of heaven. From that time "All to no use", said John Varson. is used as an adage where there is great funeral pomp over one who has led a life which does not come up to the neighbours' standards of right.
