The ruins of this castles consist of a tall gable standing in one of Fitzgeralds field in the townland of Castlebanny in the parish of Ballyhale, barony of Knocktopher County Kilkenny.
Stories say that a lady named Lady Fanning Butler lived here and left a large sum of money in trust for the poor people of the district. This money is distributed each year in June & December and all the cottagers in the townland share in it. The last distribution was on Christmas Eve and each person's share was little over 27/. The papers are signed by the Protestant minister & the P.P. and as there are no members of his creed in the district, the rector often leaves the distributiion in the P.P.'s care.
