  1. One evening towards the middle of December as a cold north wind was moaning through the leafless trees, a poor man was wending his weary way from a neighbouring town to his home in The Rower district. Before he reached home he had to pass through a long belt of wood which completely shut out the dull light of the December moon.
    When he reached about half-way through the wood he heard a little cry resembling that of a little child and almost immediately the road around him was illuminated by a weird light. Then a tall white figure appeared on the road before him and beckoned the man onwards. He followed the ghostly figure until he reached an ivy clad ruin beside the road where the cry was again repeated.
