In years gone by there was a toll on the Ferry Mount Garret bridge

In years gone by there was a toll on the Ferry Mount Garret bridge and any person wanting to walk across the bridge from the Co. Kilkenny side had to pay a halfpenny to the keeper at the gate before they could go across. One day a man came to the gate and paid his fare he asked the keeper if he could take a pracel across free, he said he left it up the road. The keeper told him he could. He went back a piece of the road and returned with another man on his back and walked across the bridge with him, he keeper of course could only look on.
