At the close of the next evening,
    Mournful the vassals tell,
How they found the young De Freyne
    Drowned within the castle well
How they bore his tender body,
    Sounding high their mournfull wail,
And they laid him near his father
    In the church of Ballyneale.
    XXXII
But the shudder that passed o'er her,
And the echo of that scream.
Never left the heart of Kathleen.
Ringing loud in many a dream.

Held the land by cruel wrong,
    When came speedy retribution,
And they fled from that ere long.
    XXXIII

    Who this signal vengeance sought,
Against the churl and his mistress,
    For the double murder wrought,

    Kathleen persihed in her shame.
    Leaving as a just memorial,
To that fatal well her name.
