  1. About one hundred years ago there lived in Rathcroghan a widow and she had one daughter. One night the mother met a fairy who asked her for her daughter. She replied that she could not get on without the support of her only daughter.
    One night while they were sitting round the fire there came running in the door what seemed to be a small calf or dog. The woman hit it with the tongs which stuck to it. At last the daughter kicked it and she stuck to it also. The animal ran away again and neither daughter nor the animal were seen again.
