    The gunner who shot him was in difficulties to steady the wheel of his gun, and a passing soldier seeing no stone handy to put to the wheel took off his shoe and put it under the wheel. His action was noted and later on Ginkle rewarded him with a vast estate, "from the Shannon to the Sea". His descendants are still living (in an outhouse of the Castle) near Roscommon.
