    The Local Fairs
The local fairs are held in towns now, but some year ago buyers transacted business in the country at crossroads, and at farmer's houses, this is done still. I have heard of two fairs held in old times which are not now held, in the village of Ballinagure and in a locality called Ardsellagh. that at Ardsellagh was changed into Ephin, as being more accommodating, I can get no account of fairs held on hills, etc. The fairs, in some of the towns are held in the streets, and toll is paid on cattle, sixpence on cows fourpence on two-year old, three-pence on yearlings, one penny a head on sheep and lambs, toll is paid to a family called Murray, at Elphin fairs. Luck money is given when an animal is sold, it is called "luck penny" it s calculated by the price of the beast, if you get a good price, you give a good luck penny
