    The Potato-Crop
    Potatoes are grown on my farm, about two roods, we have about the same amount of ground every year under potatoes. My father prepares the ground. He sows the potatoes in the garden in drills and in the tillage-field in ridges, he uses a spade for making the drills, which are made by digging out the ground flat first, then rise it in drills with a graip or a shovel, they may be as long as you like, but are rather thin, After that you scatter the manure in the furrows, and lay the splits on the manure, next you get a shovel and split the little drills of clay in each side, thus covering the splits The ridges may be done with either a spade or plough, in much the same way as the drills, but they are much wider, and the splits are stuck first, then the manure is spread over them, and the clay is shoveled in on them from the furrows. Wooden ploughs were used some years ago, but not now, I don't there are any left, at least, not in this
