One May morning a man named Patrick Tiernan of Cummeen Elphin was out in his field. He saw a woman going towards his cows. He knew that the woman was in the habit of taking away butter. So he stood behind a bush to see what she would do. She took a bit of dirt off the cows hoof threw it across her right shoulder, and said
"Gather, gather", far and near", all you gather bring it here.
Then Pat went home and told his wife all he had seen. So the next day they churned they had no butter. Then Patrick went and told the priest about the woman taking away his butter. The priest came and said mass in the woman's house, then he took a piece of rope which was under the churn. He threw it into the fire and had to use a pitchfork or it would jump out.
