  1. Local Poet
Aughrim parish could boast of many poets in bygone time. One poet whose mane was Edward Walpole lived next house to Aughrim Parochial house. He was born about the year eighteen hundred and thirty five and died in nineteen hundred and nineteen. He composed many poems. Once there was a wheel-barrow stolen from him and he made a poem about it and called it the "One wheeled Coach." Here is a verse of it
"When Sol concealed its golden rays on the thirteenth day of May.
The plundering thief rejoiced and said "Thank God 'tis the close of day."
While fully bent on foul intent regardless of reproach.
Away he trod to Cloonfad bog, and stole my One Wheeled Coach."
The James Owens of Cloonfad who lived at the same time, died in Belfast a young man. It was he who wrote "Ballagh Lake"
Och, many's the summers evening when the hard day's work was oer.
Away we ren to fish and swim, sometimes perhaps two score.
One would cry out he missed his rise, another missed his take.
